HTTP vs SOCKS5 Proxies: Protocols, Ports, and HTTPS Websites
Choose a proxy protocol that your application supports, then use its matching port. An HTTPS destination does not automatically require an HTTPS proxy setting: the destination protocol and the connection to the proxy are separate choices.

Choose for the client
| Client or workflow | Starting option | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Windows manual system proxy | HTTP | Whether the app follows system settings and can authenticate |
| Python Requests | HTTP, or the optional SOCKS extra | Credential encoding, timeouts, and DNS behavior |
| Axios built-in proxy configuration | HTTP in Node.js | Do not copy the setting into browser-side JavaScript |
| A SOCKS5 client or Proxifier | SOCKS5 | Matching SOCKS5 port and complete credentials |
HTTP CONNECT can create a tunnel to an HTTPS destination. SOCKS5 is a different proxy protocol, not a guarantee of universal application support or better speed. See the HTTP CONNECT specification and the SOCKS5 specification. SOCKS5 does not itself encrypt application traffic. Keep normal certificate validation for HTTPS destinations; capabilities defined by a protocol are not a promise that every client or product supports them.
Match DF-IP fields to the protocol
For a static record, pair HTTP with http_port and SOCKS5 with s5_port. A missing or zero port is not a usable value. For dynamic residential connections, use the protocol selected during extraction; changing only the client dropdown is insufficient.
If the client has four separate fields, split the default username:password@host:port result into host, port, username, and password. Do not paste a URL scheme, credentials, or a JSON array into the host field. Only assemble a full proxy URL when the client asks for one, encoding credential components as required by URL syntax.
Verify the choice
Test the connection, then open a known HTTPS test page from that same application. Check both the observed exit and whether page resources load. A failed connection calls for checking the protocol/port pair first; an authentication failure belongs in the 407 troubleshooting guide. Disabling TLS validation is not a repair.
Continue with Python Requests or Proxifier, using connection details from the DF-IP console.
